Highways England , Head of Intelligent Transport Systems
Dr Joanna White is the Head of Intelligent Transport Systems at Highways England. Jo has been working in the industry since 1999, following her PhD in Mathematics where she developed mathematical models for traffic networks. Jo’s career has involved demonstrating how mobile phone data could be used to produce information about movements on transport networks, M42 Active Traffic Management Monitoring and investigating how smart motorways and ramp metering could operate together. She has been responsible for overseeing the organisation’s Technology Programme and then led the National Operational Systems team looking after the systems that the Traffic Officers use to manage traffic and incidents – such as HATMS and Command and Control. Now as Head of Intelligent Transport Systems, Jo oversees teams who improve operational systems, are responsible for night time accident reduction policy, tunnels technology and future vehicle technology – including enabling trials of connected and automated vehicles.
